eyes for the blind

How it Works

The following image shows the type of infrastructure required for Phoorbu to work. We have direction lines (shown in Red) on the ground which will guide the person using Phoorbu. We use the camera of the mobile phone to capture images of these lines and process them to find out change in direction. For this we have considered two approaches namely, Edge detection (Sobel) based line detection and Hough transform based line detection. Initially Edge detection was used but it was found that the algorithm took considerable amount of time to process each image and as a result, we could not provide assistance to the user so that he/she can walk at normal pace. Looking for another approach, we found literature suggesting that Hough transform based algorithm has been used successfully to achieve real time line detection. Currently we are in the process of implementing this algorithm.
