eyes for the blind

What is Phoorbu

Phoorbu is an open source project which focuses on innovative application on Mobile phones for the blind. The basic idea is to provide assistance in navigation by letting them know the direction in the form of audio instructions.

Our inspiration comes from the proverb that goes "There are none so blind as those, that will not see". But we believe that with our technology, we can reach out those who are such blind and guide them around easily without an external help. Mobile phones, today, have become a part and parcel of every human. Applications developed for mobile phones have resulted in significant impact on human life. Our application provides a sense of direction to the blind. By intelligently processing the acquired images from the ground having white lines, a sensory feedback is provided in the form of sound guiding with directive instructions for the blind. Extending this further to the outdoor environment is possible through GPS enabled services. Currently we are working on J2ME and Android platforms.

With Phoorbu, we deliver the blind a help when nobody is around which otherwise could have been impossible.
