Study week in informatics - 2008
Monday August, 25 - Friday August, 29.
The Faculty of Informatics of the University of Lugano (USI) had organized a study week on informatics, from the 25th to the 29th of August 2008. The event was organized in collaboration with the Swiss Foundation Scienza e Gioventù. Aim of the event is to promote the informatics to high school and beginner students, through an intensive study week on topics regarding numerous everyday applications. The informatics week was an event organized at the same time in several universities (Basel, Fribourg, Genève, Neuchâtel, Windish and Zürich).
USI had hosted eight students from German Swiss part and from Ticino. Under the supervision of PhD students and researchers of the Faculty of Informatics, they had developed several projects in the hot-field of informatics, from web and iPhone applications to computer graphics and robotics. Each project had been presented at Zürich Technopark the 29th of August 2008, within the national day of informatics. In this context, the greatest IT companies had discussed the current and future trends of informatics science.
Remixing the Web: Fundamentals of Mashups Development
In this project you will learn how to combine data from your preferred web sites (e.g., GoogleMaps) for creating your own cutting-edge web site.

Introduction to computer graphics
The students will learn the basics of 3D computer graphics. They will use a 3D animation program for modeling and animating a simple character.

Robot moves first steps
Students will be the father of a Lego Mindstorms Robot. As its parents, they should teach it how to move the first steps in the surrounding world. For this purposes, they will use OpenSource AP: LeJOS.

IPhone application development
We will discover the IPhone (as well as the IPod touch) platform and we will lean how to write your personal applications that can run on this platform.
